The 16mm 5X-Wall Storm Polycarbonate Sheet is the ultimate in strength and insulation, designed to withstand extreme weather conditions with ease. Engineered with a five-layer X-web structure, this panel features three vertical walls reinforced by two diagonal layers, creating a rigid, impact-resistant barrier that resists high winds, hail, and heavy snow loads. The panel has an R-value of 2.78, offering top-tier insulation among polycarbonate sheets.

The 5X-Wall’s advanced design, featuring 50% more internal ribs and structural X-webbing, gives it unparalleled stiffness and resilience. This strength meets the Miami-Dade standard for hurricane resistance with the RDC Florida Approval Code 16699—an impressive level of durability that brings peace of mind in storm-prone regions.

Why Choose the 16mm 5X-Wall Storm?
For anyone building in areas prone to hurricanes, intense wind, or snow, the 5X-Wall is the best choice for robust, energy-efficient protection. The X-web construction offers significantly enhanced durability, insulation, and peace of mind, especially in high-stress environments.

Choose among three shades for different effects:

  • Clear: Provides high light transmission and clarity.
  • Opal: Creates diffused, glare-reducing light, perfect for roof applications, especially in high-sun areas (such as the southern USA or high elevations).
  • Bronze: Perfect for an attractive, shaded effect that provides added privacy and reduced glare.

UV Protection: All colors are UV-protected on one side to resist yellowing and damage from prolonged sun exposure.

Condensation Reduction: Opal and Bronze options reduce condensation build-up, ideal for high-humidity areas like greenhouses and covered patios.

Installation Tips:

  • Install panels with the flutes (channels) running vertically to maximize strength. End caps or vented tape are recommended to allow moisture to escape while protecting against condensation.
  • One side of the polycarbonate sheet has a UV-resistant coating. The printed or Blue side is the UV-resistant side. Be sure to install sheet with this side facing the sun to receive benefits and keep panel from yellowing.

Can I use 5X-Wall Storm Polycarbonate to board up windows during a hurricane?

Yes, this is a great option that are easy to cut to size, simple to store and lightweight for easy installation. Here's a step-by-step guide to do it effectively:

1. Measure and Cut Panels to Size - Measure each window you want to protect. Cut the polycarbonate sheet so that it overlaps the window frame by at least 1–2 inches on all sides to ensure complete coverage and a secure fit. Use a fine-tooth circular saw or table saw for clean cuts.

2. Pre-Drill Mounting Holes - Drill holes in the sheet 2” from the edges and every 12–16” around the perimeter. Use a bit slightly larger than the fastener for expansion and contraction. Avoid overtightening — polycarbonate expands and contracts with temperature changes. Our fasteners with gaskets spread the pressure between the flutes and prevent cracking.

3. Installing Mounting Hardware
Two Options:

  • Permanent Anchors (Reusable System) - Install stainless steel or galvanized anchors around the windows. Use wing nuts or hurricane panel fasteners to quickly attach and remove the sheets when needed. Great for frequent or seasonal deployment.
  • Direct Fastening (Budget/Quick Fix) - Use wood screws with neoprene washers or Tapcon screws (for masonry). Secure the sheet directly into the frame or surrounding wall. Add weatherproof tape or foam gasket between the panel and the wall to reduce rattling and seal gaps.

4. Label and Store - Mark each sheet with its corresponding window location (e.g., “Kitchen Left”). Store them flat and out of direct sunlight when not in use. Consider sealing the ends of the panels with aluminum foil tape or U-Channel so that the panels stay clean and dry when stored.

Notes:

  • Do not rely on suction cups or tape — mechanical fastening is essential for hurricane force winds.
  • Ensure all edges are smoothed to avoid injury and prevent cracking under stress.
